Inquiry Profiling #2: Collecting in-depth information NCEA Data

I wanted to collect data on my Inquiry group, my year 12 Social Studies class and I needed to go back a year to when they were year 11.  It is compulsory for all year 11’s at our school to do English and I decided to look at their results from 2022 as one of the indicators of writing success.  I have coded the students and have highlighted the two standards that I will be focussing on. Inquiry Profiling #1: Collecting in-depth information: Looking at NCEA assesssment

Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua.
I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past.

I wanted to collect data on my Inquiry group, my year 12 Social Studies class and I needed to go back a year to when they were year 11.  It is compulsory for all year 11’s at our school to do English and I decided to look at their results from 2022 as one of the indicators of writing success.

First I needed to see which standards were offered and taught that were Literacy writing standards.  There are 6 standards that are offered for writing literacy, 4 of them are internal and 2 are external.

The two standards I am thinking would be relevant to see the results of are standards 90053 and 90849, one internal and one external.

The positive reasons of using this data will be that it will hopefully help me to understand how well the kids did in their NCEA English writing standards and whether they gained achieved or higher results.

The limitations of this data are the internal has been crafted which might mean there was more time spent on drafts and getting the writing done well.  The external on the other hand would require students to be prepared to write in exam conditions which might suit the data I need better.

My next steps are to collect the results of the students and create graphs to show the visuals of the number of students who succeeded.  I also want to talk to their year 11 English teacher to provide me some feedback as to how the student learns and how they write.  I also want to collect student voice data and look at interviewing students to gain better insight into how they write.
