From the Secondary Teacher Literacy Handbook page 33:
Bishop (2019) stated that to improve Māori achievement, teachers need to
- create an extended family-like atmosphere in their classrooms, where Māori students feel the teacer cares about them as a person
- deliberately use strategies that support the skill development their students need, provide students with frequent opportunities to engage with texts of varying lengths, build their general and subject specific vocabulary knowledge and develop students' ability to critically analyse what they read.
